For a new website, a lot of the early decision revolve around design. A List Apart had an article in 2007 about the value of white space.  It still shows up when searching for web design tips as it’s still relevant today. The article gives good graphic examples both with web design and with graphic design and how white space can be used effectively in both.  It even gives examples on how simple decisions like line spacing (and the use of micro white space) can make a message more readable and aesthetically pleasing.

Once you know how to design and manipulate the space outside, inside, and around your content, you’ll be able to give your readers a head start, position products more precisely, and perhaps even begin to see your own content in a new light.
